Best Quiet Aquarium Air Pumps
Compare aquarium air pumps by airflow control, installed depth, vibration, outlet needs and maintenance, with Tetra APS and Aquael OXYBOOST options.

The quick choice
Choose the circuit, then control the vibration
Compare rated output and how adjustment works. None of these published specifications is a measured room-noise ranking or a guarantee of delivered flow at every depth.
Compare the practical differences
| Pump | Maximum rated air | Adjustment | Practical check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tetra APS100 | 100 L/h | Separate flow-control valve | Complete the single-outlet circuit and check backflow protection |
| Tetra APS150 | 150 L/h | Separate flow-control valve | Extra output only if the depth and device need it |
| Aquael APR 150 PLUS | 150 L/h | Onboard dial | Single outlet; 60 cm maximum head is not full-flow depth |
Output figures are maker ratings. Confirm the exact UK electrical version, supplied accessories and installed performance; no comparable decibel results are claimed.
The shortlist
Mains air pumps with useful adjustment options
A separate air supply to assess
Tetra APS100 aquarium air pump
An external air pump with a flow-control accessory. The stated 100 L/h figure describes air output, not the water moved through a sponge filter.
- 100 L/h maximum air output
- 2.5 W stated input
- 4 mm internal-diameter airline connection
An air-driven installation after checking operating depth, back-pressure and the sponge maker’s requirements.
- Airline and the non-return valve are separate according to the manual.
- Keep the pump outside the water; follow the placement and below-water-level check-valve instructions.
A higher-output single-line mains option
Tetra APS150 aquarium air pump, black
A diaphragm air pump with rubber feet and an external airflow-control valve. Its 150 L/h maximum is a pump specification, not a guaranteed delivered output through every stone or sponge filter.
- 150 L/h maximum rated airflow
- Single-outlet APS150 variant
- Separate flow-control valve
An installed airline circuit that needs more output than the APS100, after checking depth, restriction and the supplied UK electrical version.
- Airline, suitable diffuser and a check valve may need buying separately; inspect the selected pack.
- Neither the maker’s aquarium-litre range nor quiet wording is a measured noise result in your room.
Single-outlet airflow adjustment on the pump
Aquael OXYBOOST APR 150 PLUS
The APR 150 PLUS has an onboard adjustment dial and rubber feet. It is distinct from the non-adjustable AP 100 PLUS and the larger two-outlet models.
- 150 L/h maximum airflow
- 2.2 W maker specification
- One outlet; 4/6 mm airline; 60 cm maximum head label
A compatible indoor setup within the model’s depth and airflow limits, with the correct supplied UK power arrangement.
- Maximum head is not useful airflow at that depth; test the complete installed circuit.
- Confirm the UK plug and instructions on the selected offer before ordering; do not modify the lead.
Choose a quiet installation as well as a pump
The best quiet aquarium air pump supplies the required air without turning the cabinet, airline or lid into a sounding board. Motor noise, transmitted vibration and bubbles at the surface are different sounds. A pump described as quiet may still be noticeable beside a bed, while a suitable pump on a resonant shelf can sound worse than expected.
Our comparison uses documented output, controls and installation features. It does not rank the pumps by unmeasured decibels or promise silence. The shortlist covers Tetra APS100, the higher-output APS150 and Aquael OXYBOOST APR 150 PLUS with an onboard adjustment dial. Check the actual circuit before deciding which output range is useful.
First establish whether the aquarium needs an air pump. An air-driven sponge filter needs one continuously, whereas an additional air stone serves a different purpose alongside a mains filter. Buying the smallest pump only for its presumed sound level can leave insufficient air at working depth.
Read airflow, depth and litres as different specifications
Airflow is commonly stated in litres of air per hour. Aquarium capacity is litres of water, and maximum head describes a pressure-related limit. These figures are not interchangeable. A pump's maximum output does not promise the same output through a check valve, long hose and loaded sponge at the aquarium bottom.
Measure the depth at which air enters the stone or filter and include all fittings. A narrow or kinked line and a blocked diffuser create additional restriction. Maximum head is not an instruction to choose a pump operating at that limit, where useful flow may be very low.
Aquael lists 150 L/h, 2.2 W and a 60 cm maximum-head label for APR 150 PLUS. Those figures describe different things: they do not mean 150 L/h is delivered at 60 cm depth. Test the supported assembled circuit and look for the water movement required by the attached device.
Tetra APS100 and APS150: simple single-outlet options
The APS100 is the 100 L/h maximum-output variant, while APS150 is rated to 150 L/h. Both use a single air outlet and an external control valve in the standard manufacturer arrangement. Choose the extra capacity only where the device and depth justify it, rather than assuming every larger number is a better fit.
Tetra's manual describes a solid low-resonance support surface and rubber feet to control transmitted vibration. It also covers checking an obstructed air intake, a clogged stone and diaphragm problems when output changes. These service points make maintenance access worth planning before placing the pump at the back of a full cabinet.
Check the supplied pack. Airline, the air stone and the non-return valve may be separate purchases; a photograph of a complete aquarium is not a contents list. Confirm the correct UK electrical version and follow the supplied rating plate and manual if the selected offer differs from a general family specification.
Aquael APR 150 PLUS: adjustment at the pump
The APR 150 PLUS puts its output adjustment on the pump body. Aquael distinguishes the adjustable APR 150 and APR 300 from the AP 100 and AP 200 variants, so the letters matter. The selected 150 PLUS listing is the single-outlet version; do not assume every OXYBOOST has the same outlet count or dial.
The maker describes rubber feet and an insulated housing to reduce vibration. That supports a useful design comparison but does not provide a common test method for declaring it quieter than the APS pumps in your room. Keep the dial accessible and provide a stable dry mounting position with the ventilation required by its instructions.
Confirm the supplied UK plug, voltage and instructions before ordering the exact offer. Regional listings can use the same product-family photograph, and an electrical import should not be treated as identical merely because it ships to a UK address. Do not modify a mains lead to make an unsuitable version fit.
Reduce avoidable vibration without enclosing the pump
Keep the feet resting as intended on a firm supported surface, with the casing clear of walls and hollow cabinet panels. Route airline so it does not chatter against a lid or the back of the stand. Where the exact manual supports a sound-absorbing mat, use it without blocking the air intake or destabilising the pump.
Do not wrap the unit in towels, put it in a sealed padded box or hang it by the power cable. A model with an approved hanging eye must still use its prescribed mounting and position. Solve the actual contact or vibration point rather than muffling the whole device indiscriminately.
Adjust air with the manufacturer's controls. Closing a line completely, knotting hose or adding several restrictive valves to quiet the bubbles can increase back-pressure or stop the connected filter working properly. A correctly sized stone and suitable output setting are a better place to start.
Include the valve, airline and diffuser in the purchase
Match the air circuit's diameter and purpose. A standard 4 mm internal airline may suit the selected pumps, but the exact connectors and valve must fit. The CV4 below is an example of a compatible-size non-return valve; its role is backflow protection rather than airflow adjustment.
Back-siphon protection in an air line
Tetra CV4 non-return air valve
A non-return valve for a compatible aquarium airline. Fit in the indicated direction so air can reach the filter while reverse water flow is resisted.
- For compatible aquarium airline
- Directional non-return valve
- Used outside the aquarium
An air-pump installation requiring a check valve under its manufacturer’s placement instructions.
- Not an airflow regulator or a valve for canister water hoses.
- Check orientation and condition; it does not make an unsafe pump position acceptable.
Follow the valve and placement guide for direction and routing. Keep the pump dry, secure and positioned as its own manual requires. A high loop of airline is not a reliable substitute for a required valve, and a cable drip loop addresses a different water route.
Choose an air stone for its actual size and restriction or use the air-driven filter's supported connection. If bubbles become uneven or weak, inspect the line and stone before buying a louder or larger pump. Do not assume a worn diaphragm, clogged intake or blocked stone will be corrected by turning a dial further.
Plan overnight operation and a separate backup
Do not silence an air-driven filter by switching its pump off with the lighting every night. The filter normally needs continuing operation, and plants also respire in darkness. If a sound is unacceptable, improve the supported installation or select suitable equipment while maintaining the aquarium's needs.
A mains-only pump has no inherent power-cut protection. Our battery-pump guide compares portable and rechargeable approaches. A supported backup circuit should be tested at actual depth, with battery condition and changeover behaviour checked before an outage.
For running cost, use the selected unit's rated power and expected operating time in the electricity calculator. A low wattage does not prove adequate pressure, and a quiet housing does not establish a particular annual saving. The useful choice balances sufficient output, practical servicing and a sound level you can manage in the actual room.
Common questions
Which aquarium air pump is completely silent?
No silence guarantee is made for these options. Perceived sound includes the motor, transmitted vibration and bubbles, and varies with the room and installation. Compare supported design features and solve resonant contact points instead of relying on a silent label.
Does 150 L/h mean the pump suits a 150-litre tank?
Those numbers describe different quantities. Rated airflow is litres of air per hour, while tank capacity is water volume. The installed device, depth, restriction and livestock determine the requirement; a matching numeral does not prove suitability.
How is OXYBOOST APR different from AP?
Aquael identifies the APR versions as adjustable. The selected APR 150 PLUS has one outlet and an onboard adjustment dial; the AP 100 PLUS and larger two-outlet variants have different controls or formats, so check the exact letters and model.
Can I cover a noisy pump with a towel?
Do not wrap or seal the pump to suppress sound. That can obstruct its air intake or ventilation. Follow its supported positioning and any permitted mat arrangement, checking casing contact, airline vibration and the diffuser separately.
Can I switch the pump off overnight?
An air-driven filter normally needs continuous air supply. Plants and fish also use oxygen during darkness. Do not put essential aeration or filtration on the light timer simply to reduce noise; assess the actual aquarium and correct the installation.
Are airline and check valves always included?
No. Contents vary by model and selected pack. Check the supplied list and match the airline diameter, diffuser and non-return valve to the circuit. A product photograph of a complete setup is not proof that every pictured accessory is included.
