Choose the aeration question you need to answer

An aquarium air pump can drive a sponge filter, feed an air stone or provide useful backup aeration. Those jobs share airline and fittings, but they do not have identical requirements. The right starting point is the aquarium's fish, depth, filtration and normal surface movement, rather than the largest litre rating on a pump box.

Use the guides below to work through need, equipment choice, installation and emergency preparation. Each covers a separate decision, so you can check a fitting or power-cut plan without reading a whole equipment comparison first.

Understand surface movement and circulation together

Fish use oxygen dissolved in the water. Movement at the air-water surface supports gas exchange, while circulation carries water around the aquarium. An air stone's rising bubbles move surrounding water and disturb the surface; it is not a bottle of pure oxygen, and a dense bubble display does not measure the oxygen available to fish.

A correctly arranged filter return may already create useful surface movement in a suitable aquarium. Some setups need additional aeration, and air-driven filters need a continuing air supply to move water through them. Decide which situation you have before buying another device. Our air-pump need guide explains the checks.

Plants do not remove the need to consider oxygen. They produce oxygen during photosynthesis but continue respiration in darkness, when fish and biological filtration also need oxygen. Warmer water and a high organic load can increase concern. A heavily planted aquarium is not automatically protected through a warm night or a power cut.

Match the pump to the complete air circuit

Include the pump, hose, control valve, non-return valve and air stone or sponge filter in the plan. Water depth and the restriction of the connected device affect delivered air. A maximum airflow measured under specified conditions is not the same as output through a mature sponge filter at the bottom of your tank.

The APS100 below is a straightforward single-outlet option where its capacity suits that circuit. Its 100 L/h maximum should be read as a pump rating. Compare the quiet air-pump shortlist if you need more output or adjustment on the pump itself.

A separate air supply to assess

Tetra APS100 aquarium air pump

An external air pump with a flow-control accessory. The stated 100 L/h figure describes air output, not the water moved through a sponge filter.

  • 100 L/h maximum air output
  • 2.5 W stated input
  • 4 mm internal-diameter airline connection
Suits

An air-driven installation after checking operating depth, back-pressure and the sponge maker’s requirements.

Keep in mind
  • Airline and the non-return valve are separate according to the manual.
  • Keep the pump outside the water; follow the placement and below-water-level check-valve instructions.

Check the smallest livestock as well as the bubbles. Position air-driven equipment so it does not create a harsh current through every resting area, disturb substrate or prevent fish feeding normally. Airflow adjustment should use the manufacturer's supported controls; a crushed or tightly knotted hose is not a proper regulator.

Keep the pump dry and protect against backflow

Most aquarium diaphragm pumps sit outside the water. Use a stable dry location that cannot let the pump fall into the aquarium or walk off an edge through vibration. Follow the exact manual's placement rule. An above-water position beside the tank is commonly specified, with a compatible check valve required or strongly recommended according to the equipment.

The CV4 below is for an airline with a 4 mm internal diameter. Its arrow follows normal airflow from pump towards aquarium. A control tap changes airflow, while a check valve is intended to limit reverse water movement; the two parts are not interchangeable.

Back-siphon protection in an air line

Tetra CV4 non-return air valve

A non-return valve for a compatible aquarium airline. Fit in the indicated direction so air can reach the filter while reverse water flow is resisted.

  • For compatible aquarium airline
  • Directional non-return valve
  • Used outside the aquarium
Suits

An air-pump installation requiring a check valve under its manufacturer’s placement instructions.

Keep in mind
  • Not an airflow regulator or a valve for canister water hoses.
  • Check orientation and condition; it does not make an unsafe pump position acceptable.

Read check valves and placement before routing the line. A drip loop on a cable and a high loop in airline do different jobs, and neither proves that an incorrectly installed or worn check valve works. Inspect joints and follow the supported installation without blowing through parts by mouth.

Choose a manageable diffuser and keep it working

An air stone is a diffuser. It does not add the established biological media provided by a sponge filter. Choose its footprint and operating requirement for the pump, depth and available space, keeping it clear of intakes and places where fish could become trapped.

Tetra's AS30 is one fine-pored option for a compatible air circuit. Follow its preparation guidance and check for a changed bubble pattern or reduced output. A clogged stone adds back-pressure and can make the pump work poorly even while its motor continues to vibrate.

A straightforward diffuser for a matching air circuit

Tetra AS30 aquarium air stone

A fine-pored air stone in the AS30 version. It needs a suitable pump and airline, and its installed depth and condition affect the air that passes through it.

  • AS30 selected variant
  • Fine-pored air diffuser
  • Intended to work with a separate air pump
Suits

A compatible freshwater aeration circuit where the selected stone fits the space and the pump can overcome its restriction.

Keep in mind
  • Check the stone’s physical footprint and its intended air circuit before ordering.
  • A blocked stone increases back-pressure; inspect output and replace as instructed.

Check airline for kinks, stretched ends and contact with hollow furniture that amplifies vibration. Keep the pump's air intake unobstructed and service it only as the exact manual allows. Enclosing a noisy pump in a sealed padded box can interfere with its ventilation and is not a sensible sound-control method.

Prepare for power loss and notice changes early

A mains air pump stops when its supply stops. A battery device can support aeration, but a separate air stone does not keep water passing through a stopped canister filter. A compatible established sponge filter can continue operating from sufficient battery air, provided you have checked that complete arrangement in advance.

Use the power-cut guide to compare a manually started battery pump with a rechargeable device that has verified switchover behaviour. Keep the necessary batteries or charge available, and test the assembled line at its actual depth rather than judging it by bubbles in a shallow cup.

Observe fish, temperature and actual flow as part of daily and weekly care. Gasping or sudden deterioration needs prompt checks for temperature, ammonia and nitrite as well as appropriate aeration. Seek experienced aquatic help for severe or persistent distress; adding bubbles does not diagnose or resolve every water-quality problem.

Check the complete air setup

Keep a short record of the pump model, airline size, valve direction, diffuser or sponge and operating depth. It helps you replace the actual worn part rather than ordering a similarly shaped accessory. Check that the air reaches its destination after any change; a running motor alone cannot establish delivery through a restricted line.

For an air-driven filter, use the sponge-filter comparison to check the body and uplift as well as the pump. For a motor-driven filter, compare spray bars and directional outlets before treating extra bubbles as the only way to change surface movement. The filtration hub explains the separate media and circulation decisions.

Test a backup with the complete installed circuit before relying on it. After mains power returns, follow power-cut recovery checks for the heater, filter, water and controllers; restarting an air pump does not confirm that the rest of the aquarium has recovered.

Common questions

Is an air pump the same as a water pump?

No. An air pump supplies air through airline to a diffuser or air-driven device. A water pump directly moves water. Both may support circulation in a suitable arrangement, but their connections, installation and operating limits are different.

Can a filter return provide surface movement?

A correctly arranged return can create useful surface agitation in some aquariums. Assess the actual fish, temperature, waste load and layout. Air-driven filtration still requires an air supply, and a backup plan matters when mains circulation stops.

Do planted tanks need oxygen at night?

Yes. Plants continue respiration in darkness, while fish and the biological system also use oxygen. Daytime plant growth or visible bubbles do not guarantee appropriate overnight conditions, especially during warmth or loss of circulation.

What does a check valve do?

It is intended to limit water flowing backwards through the airline towards the pump. Match its hose size, install it in the indicated airflow direction and inspect it. It is different from a flow-control tap and does not make the pump submersible.

Does an air stone replace biological filtration?

An ordinary air stone diffuses air and moves surrounding water; it does not provide an established sponge or other biological filter stage. Use appropriate filtration and water tests alongside aeration rather than treating bubbles as proof of waste processing.

Will a battery pump keep the whole aquarium running?

Usually it powers an air circuit only. Heating and a separate mains filter may still stop. Test the actual backup arrangement and prepare a wider plan for water quality, temperature and safe equipment restart during an extended outage.
