The quick choice

Choose the sponge layout first

Plan the physical sponge assembly and a suitable air supply together. These options differ in footprint and media arrangement; none has a universal stocking guarantee.

Model names and aquarium-capacity labels do not measure installed water flow. Air-pump, airline and check-valve needs must be assessed separately.

The shortlist

Air-driven sponge filters to compare

The smaller L-series option

sera L60 air-driven sponge filter

The smaller named option in sera’s air-driven L range. Consider it when the larger assembly would occupy too much of the working space.

  • L60 / item 08500
  • Air-driven sponge
  • No motor inside the aquarium
Suits

An appropriately stocked smaller setup after checking its actual footprint, uplift position and air supply.

Keep in mind
  • Check the exact L60 assembly; do not assume L150 sponges fit.
  • Air pump and suitable airline need to be planned separately.

A straightforward airlift filter

sera L150 air-driven sponge filter

An air-operated sponge assembly that draws aquarium water through foam into an uplift tube. It provides a different approach from a motor-driven intake.

  • L150 / item 08520
  • Air-driven filtration
  • Separate air pump required
Suits

A freshwater setup where the installed sponge and uplift fit, with a suitable separate air supply and manageable waste load.

Keep in mind
  • The model name is not a stocking guarantee or a water-flow measurement.
  • Confirm sponge and uplift dimensions, airline and pump requirements before purchase.

Two removable sponges and media chambers

hygger double sponge filter, smaller version

A twin-sponge assembly with additional media containers and an adjustable uplift. This is the smaller air-driven version in the selected Amazon listing.

  • Smaller air-driven version
  • Twin sponge layout
  • Additional media containers
Suits

An aquarium with enough clear wall area for both sponges and the appropriate air supply at its working depth.

Keep in mind
  • Amazon’s up-to-150 L label is not a guarantee for every stocking or depth.
  • Distinguish it from larger or electric hygger models; check the supplied instructions and replacement size.

How a sponge filter moves and cleans water

An air-driven sponge filter uses rising bubbles in an uplift tube to encourage aquarium water through foam. The sponge catches particles and, once established, supports biological processing. There is no motor-driven impeller in the selected sponge assemblies, although the separate air pump has its own moving components and maintenance needs. An electric filter with foam is a different product category.

This shortlist compares the sera L60 and L150 airlift assemblies with the smaller hygger twin-sponge model. The different layouts suit different installation and maintenance needs. Air-driven filtration can suit setups needing an appropriate intake and distributed movement, but the exact sponge, fish, waste load and depth still matter. Do not treat a “shrimp” or “fry” product label as proof that every opening and suction arrangement suits every life stage.

Choose the assembly by physical fit

sera L60: the smaller named option in the L-series, useful to consider where a larger assembly would occupy too much room. Identify the L60/item 08500 and measure the actual supplied sponge and uplift before deciding it will fit behind hardscape. A model name containing a number is not a measured water-output specification.

sera L150: the next selected option, identified as item 08520. Its straightforward airlift arrangement is worth considering when you want a sponge assembly without additional media chambers. Check the intended position, water depth and removal path. The sponge should remain accessible for gentle cleaning rather than being buried in a corner you cannot reach.

hygger smaller double sponge: offers two sponge sections and additional media containers, with an adjustable uplift. The extra pieces make maintenance access and clear wall space particularly relevant. This selection is the smaller air-driven version shown by the Amazon listing, not a similarly named larger or electric hygger filter. Use that exact model’s instructions and confirm replacement sponge dimensions before ordering extras.

Check the complete installed footprint in the exact product drawing before buying for a tight space. Check width across both sponges, forward projection from the glass, uplift height and the movement needed to release cups or remove the foam. A small-looking photograph cannot answer those questions.

Match the air supply without confusing air and water flow

The air pump must provide suitable output at the aquarium’s working depth and through the installed airline, valve and filter. A maximum air-output label measured under different conditions cannot guarantee performance through a particular sponge. Depth and restrictions affect delivery. The pump’s wattage alone does not establish a correct pairing.

The Tetra APS100 below illustrates the air-supply side of the purchase. Tetra lists a maximum 100 L/h of air and 2.5 W input. That does not mean it moves 100 L/h of aquarium water through whichever sponge you attach. Check the filter’s requirements and adjust the air supply according to both manuals rather than assuming a particular bubble rate proves sufficient biological capacity.

A separate air supply to assess

Tetra APS100 aquarium air pump

An external air pump with a flow-control accessory. The stated 100 L/h figure describes air output, not the water moved through a sponge filter.

  • 100 L/h maximum air output
  • 2.5 W stated input
  • 4 mm internal-diameter airline connection
Suits

An air-driven installation after checking operating depth, back-pressure and the sponge maker’s requirements.

Keep in mind
  • Airline and the non-return valve are separate according to the manual.
  • Keep the pump outside the water; follow the placement and below-water-level check-valve instructions.
View on Amazon

According to the APS manual, compatible 4 mm internal-diameter airline and a non-return valve are separate items. Plan those rather than discovering an incomplete installation after buying the sponge. Keep the air pump dry and outside the aquarium, on an appropriate stable surface with the clearances its instructions require. Avoid burying it in towels to quieten it.

Install the airline and non-return valve correctly

A non-return valve resists water travelling backwards along the airline. It is not the same as a flow-control valve. Follow the air pump’s placement instructions: the Tetra manual specifies a check valve when the pump is below aquarium water level. Follow the indicated direction so air can reach the filter, and verify that the valve is suitable for the airline.

Back-siphon protection in an air line

Tetra CV4 non-return air valve

A non-return valve for a compatible aquarium airline. Fit in the indicated direction so air can reach the filter while reverse water flow is resisted.

  • For compatible aquarium airline
  • Directional non-return valve
  • Used outside the aquarium
Suits

An air-pump installation requiring a check valve under its manufacturer’s placement instructions.

Keep in mind
  • Not an airflow regulator or a valve for canister water hoses.
  • Check orientation and condition; it does not make an unsafe pump position acceptable.

Route the airline without crushing it under a lid or pulling the sponge out of position. A check valve fitted backwards, a kink or a fouled component can all reduce air delivery. If bubbles stop, examine the route before increasing the pump setting. Never substitute a small airline valve for a canister water-hose fitting; they are different systems.

Where sponge filtration helps and where it has limits

A sponge provides a broad intake surface, and an accessible airlift can be simple to inspect. These features can be useful in an appropriately planned freshwater aquarium. However, the foam still loads with debris, bubbles and the external pump create sound, and coarse particles may remain visible in the display. Consider the fish’s needs rather than assuming that gentle-looking movement means every aquarium is adequately circulated.

A heavily fed tank may need a different media and circulation arrangement. Planting and wood can also separate areas of the aquarium from the return. Look for useful surface movement and persistent waste collection, and assess ammonia and nitrite. Our filter selection guide explains how these checks complement the product label.

An additional sponge can be useful alongside another filter, provided the aquarium has space and the air supply is suitable. It does not become a ready-to-use biological backup the moment it is submerged. Establish it under appropriate conditions, and do not move it between aquariums without considering cross-contamination and the receiving aquarium’s needs.

Maintain the foam while preserving established biology

When the foam is loaded and flow through it falls, clean gently in removed aquarium water. Avoid detergent, boiling water and an aggressive attempt to make established media look new. Check the uplift and airline separately, following the model instructions. An air pump’s intake filter is not the same component as the aquarium sponge and should receive its own prescribed care.

Replace sponge material when it is losing integrity, no longer holds its shape or the exact manufacturer’s instructions require it. On a twin assembly, do not assume both sponges need replacement together. Retain functioning established material and monitor water quality after substantial work. New ceramic media in a chamber is not instantly mature either.

Confirm model-specific compatibility for replacement sponges, uplift sections and suction cups. Similar twin filters can have different fittings and foam sizes. For the broader decision between foam, ceramic and disposable stages, read filter media explained. Choose the setup you can inspect, clean and operate continuously rather than the one with the most ambitious litre claim.

Compare air pumps for the complete circuit, and follow check-valve and placement guidance before connecting the sponge.

Common questions

Does a sponge filter need an air pump?

The air-driven assemblies in this guide need a separate suitable air supply. They are not complete motor-driven filters. Check the pump, airline, non-return valve and any flow-control components required for the exact assembly and installation.

Is a sponge filter safe for all fry and shrimp?

Check the actual intake surface, openings, suction and livestock needs. Sponge filtration can offer a useful intake arrangement, but no generic product category guarantees suitability for every species or life stage without assessing the installation.

Can I use the air-pump rating as the filter’s water flow?

No. A stated litres-per-hour air output is not a measurement of water passing through the sponge. Uplift design, operating depth, air delivery and foam condition influence the installed water movement.

Do two sponges mean twice the filtration?

Two sections provide a different physical arrangement and maintenance options, but they do not establish a simple doubling of biological performance. Media maturity, effective flow, feeding and the aquarium’s waste load remain central to suitability.

Does a sponge filter make an aquarium silent?

There is no impeller in these air-driven assemblies, but bubbles, surface disturbance and the separate air pump can all be audible. Correct pump placement and airline routing help; do not switch filtration off nightly to avoid investigating noise.

Can I replace both sponges at once?

Avoid discarding all established biological material together. Replace only what condition and instructions justify, retain effective established filtration and monitor ammonia and nitrite after significant changes. Brown colour alone does not mean a sponge has failed.
