Best Automatic Feeders for Freshwater Aquariums
Compare EHEIM autofeeder, TWINfeeder and JUWEL EasyFeed by food format, mounting, portion trials, battery requirements and daily checking.

The quick choice
Choose for the food, opening and feeding routine
Choose the feeder only after confirming the fish eat compatible dry food and the unit fits a secure supported position. Trial portions in the real installation and retain daily checks; automation does not monitor filtration, temperature or fish condition.
Compare delivery and programme limits

The shortlist
Three automatic feeding approaches
A single dry-food feeding chamber
EHEIM autofeeder 3581
A battery-operated drum feeder with an approximately 100 ml chamber, adjustable dispensing opening and up to four programmed feeding times.
- Original 3581 model
- Approx. 100 ml chamber
- 2 × AA/LR6 alkaline batteries
A compatible feeding opening and dry food that dispenses consistently in an observed trial.
- Not the mains-powered Wi-Fi autofeeder+ 3583.
- Use the specified alkaline cells; the maker excludes rechargeable batteries.
- A turning drum does not prove the correct portion fell into the water.
Separate control for two dry foods
EHEIM TWINfeeder 3582
Two separately programmable food chambers with feed-screw delivery. Each food needs its own portion trial; both channels contribute to the total ration.
- Two food chambers
- Separate feed-screw control
- 4 × AA/LR6 batteries
Aquariums that need two suitable dry-food formats and have room for the complete unit and drop path.
- More setup and portion checking than a single chamber.
- Follow the exact mounting and battery instructions; no universal rim-clamp fit claim.
- Two outputs do not guarantee equal access for every fish.
A compatible JUWEL feeding opening
JUWEL EasyFeed automatic feeder, 89000
A 75 ml battery feeder with one daily feed or a second feed six hours later. The holding jacket needs a suitable supported feeding opening.
- 75 ml chamber
- One or two feeds per day
- 2 × AA batteries
Owners who can use the specified mounting and whose feeding routine fits the fixed second interval.
- First activation dispenses food; plan the start time.
- Second feed is six hours after the first, not an independently selected time.
- Battery removal requires reprogramming; not SmartFeed or AppControl.
The best automatic feeder is the one that delivers the right food through your aquarium’s actual opening in a repeatable portion. A large chamber, extra programmes or two outputs are useful only when they suit the fish and can be checked. Choose the feeding method and physical installation before comparing convenience features.
These three options cover a conventional single drum, separate feed-screw chambers and a simple JUWEL-compatible routine. The comparison uses manufacturer instructions and identified catalogue models. It does not claim a shared dispensing trial, measured moisture resistance or a guarantee of unattended feeding.
Start with the diet and who receives it
Confirm that the fish eat the intended dry food and that its size and shape suit the feeder. Frozen, moist and live foods need their own appropriate handling; they should not be put into a dry-food drum because a holiday is approaching. A fish accepting one food occasionally is different from a reliable feeding routine for the whole absence.
Consider where the food lands and how the animals feed. Fast surface feeders may intercept food intended for lower fish. Two food types do not guarantee that a shy or nocturnal species receives its share. Observe actual feeding and arrange any specialist or targeted care with a capable person.
The RSPCA recommends a responsible daily holiday check even with an automatic feeder. Keep that check in the plan. Use holiday preparation for the wider care arrangement, rather than expecting the feeder to monitor water quality and life-support equipment.
Check mounting, clearance and the complete drop path
Look at the rim, cover opening, braces, cables and light before ordering. The unit must be secured by a supported method with room for its dispensing mechanism to move. A feeder that balances on a narrow lid or drops food onto a cross-brace has not passed the installation check.
Keep the device away from splashes and excessive condensation as its instructions require. Check the path to the water with the normal lid fitted and plants in place. A floating canopy can intercept a portion, while a return jet can push food into an inaccessible corner. Do not switch off essential filtration to make an unsuitable drop point appear workable.
For a nonstandard cover, consult the aquarium and feeder makers about supported fittings. Do not cut an assembled lid casually around wiring, lights or occupied water. A product described broadly as suitable for aquariums still needs the right physical opening and support in your installation.
EHEIM autofeeder 3581: a conventional single drum
The original 3581 has an approximately 100 ml food chamber and uses two AA/LR6 alkaline batteries. Its manual permits up to four programmed feeding times, with the portion affected by the dispensing opening and drum rotations. Treat those as controls to trial, not as proof that a standard opening always equals the correct meal.
EHEIM describes an actively ventilated chamber, but that does not make poor placement or damp food irrelevant. Fill the dry chamber appropriately, leave room for normal movement and inspect the food during the trial. A full container is not a reason to set the maximum number of feeds.
The manual excludes rechargeable cells. It also explains a limited battery-change interval for retaining settings, so check the clock and programme after replacement rather than relying on memory. This is the battery-operated 3581, not the mains-powered Wi-Fi autofeeder+ 3583. Choose it where one suitable dry-food format and the supported mount meet the need.
EHEIM TWINfeeder 3582: separate food channels
The TWINfeeder uses two food chambers with separately programmed feed-screw delivery. It can suit a routine requiring two compatible dry foods, but it adds setup decisions. Each channel needs a measured trial, and their combined delivery must still fit the aquarium’s total ration.
A feed screw differs from a drum opening, so do not transfer a rotation count or portion assumption from the 3581. Trial the actual food through each channel, account for manual test deliveries and confirm that the normal programme behaves as intended. The manual specifies four AA/LR6 cells and excludes rechargeables.
Allow room for the whole unit, both outlets, filling and secure fastening. Do not assume it shares the single-drum model’s open-rim bracket or installation envelope. Its advantage is separate control, not a claim that two chambers are inherently safer or that every fish automatically gets a separate meal.
JUWEL EasyFeed 89000: a simple fixed second interval
The EasyFeed has a 75 ml chamber and a supplied holding jacket for a suitable feeding opening. JUWEL’s manual describes one feed every 24 hours or an optional second feed six hours after the first. The second time cannot be chosen independently, so check whether that pattern suits the fish and lighting routine.
The first activation dispenses food immediately and establishes the repeating time. Count that portion when setting up or testing. The manual also requires reprogramming after the batteries are removed or replaced. This is a practical operating limitation to show anybody who will maintain it while you are away.
Use the correct compatible JUWEL opening or an installation expressly supported for the tank. The maker describes optional air-pump ventilation for humid conditions, but that adds a separate supported air circuit and is not permission to place the feeder in a wet enclosure. The EasyFeed is distinct from SmartFeed 2.0 and SmartFeed AppControl: their app, feed-screw and scheduling features do not belong to this model.
Trial portions outside the tank, then in the real position
Begin with a clean dry collection surface where the instructions permit a manual dispensing test. Check several deliveries using the same food and setting. Fine powder, broken flakes, pellet size and the amount remaining in a chamber can affect what drops, so one apparently correct portion is weak evidence for a whole holiday.
Then trial the installed feeder while you are present. Watch the scheduled event, inspect the route to the water and confirm that fish receive and eat an appropriate amount. Keep a record of settings and the observed result. A dry collection test cannot reproduce condensation, canopy interception or competition between fish.
Count every manual test feed that enters the aquarium. Avoid adding the normal hand-fed meal on top simply because the button press was described as testing. Do not use uncontrolled extra feeding to demonstrate reliability, and remove uneaten food appropriately if the trial over-delivers.
If the portion cannot be made suitable, choose a different method rather than relying on tape, an improvised blocked opening or a last-minute food change that the maker does not support. Pre-measured manual care can be the better option.
Check food, batteries and the rest of the aquarium daily
A moving display or rotating mechanism does not prove that dry food reached the water. The daily check should include the outlet, food condition, mount and actual fish response, alongside temperature, water level and filter return. Explain how to recognise an obstruction without repeatedly pressing a feed button over the tank.
Battery feeders can continue feeding during a mains power cut while filtration and heating have stopped. Follow power-cut recovery checks and agree a temporary feeding response appropriate to the water and livestock. Automation should not keep adding waste to an unassessed stopped system.
When the feeder is stored, follow its cleaning and battery-removal instructions. Keep parts dry and inspect them before the next use. An old successful holiday trial does not establish that aged batteries, a changed food or a new mounting position will behave identically.
A feeder trial belongs alongside daily and weekly aquarium checks. Record the portion delivered and whether it is eaten, while continuing temperature, water-level and filter observations. A turning drum cannot confirm those other conditions.
Common questions
Can an automatic feeder use frozen or wet food?
These selections are dry-food devices. Use only food formats supported by the exact model and arrange appropriate separate care for frozen, moist or live foods rather than placing them in a dry chamber.
Is the JUWEL EasyFeed second feeding time adjustable?
Its optional second feed occurs six hours after the first, according to the manual. Check that fixed interval against the fish’s routine; it is not an independently programmed second time.
Can I use rechargeable batteries in the EHEIM feeders?
The cited 3581 and TWINfeeder manuals exclude rechargeable batteries. Follow the specified cell type and check settings after a change rather than substituting a different battery chemistry.
Does a larger food chamber mean a safer holiday?
No. Capacity does not verify portions, humidity, food delivery or equipment operation. Choose a tested routine for the absence and retain daily checks by a responsible person.
Will the feeder stop when the aquarium filter loses mains power?
A battery-powered feeder can continue running independently. That makes a power-cut plan necessary: inspect fish, circulation and water quality and manage feeding appropriately rather than assuming all devices stop together.
Do I still need somebody to visit each day?
Yes. RSPCA holiday guidance recommends daily checks of the fish and equipment, including confirming that an automatic feeder works. Food delivery is only one part of aquarium care.
