Best Clip-On Lights for Small Planted Aquariums

Compare compact clip-on freshwater plant lights by rim fit, arm position, coverage, dimming and timer limits, with Aquael and hygger options.

Small planted open-top aquarium with a compact clip-on LED secured to the rim

The quick choice

Choose secure fit and manageable output

Compare the simple compact mount with an adjustable higher-output option. Confirm the exact rim and controller before treating either small-tank label as a complete match.

Power and mounting arrangements differ; wattage alone does not establish the light reaching plants. The hygger clamp wording requires confirmation for the actual rim.

The shortlist

Compact planted-aquarium lights to compare

A straightforward compact rim-mounted plant light

Aquael Leddy Smart 2 Plant light, 6 W, white

The white 6 W Plant version of Leddy Smart 2, intended for smaller freshwater aquariums. It is a different model from the later 4.8 W Day & Night light.

  • 6 W Plant version
  • 10–50 L maker range
  • Up to 35 cm tank height; glass up to 6 mm
Suits

A compatible small tank within the model’s installation limits, after checking the rim, glass thickness, lid and plant coverage.

Keep in mind
  • A framed rim or lid may obstruct the slide-on mounting even when the bare glass is thin enough.
  • Confirm the supplied UK electrical version and exact model; do not copy later Day & Night controls.

A repositionable small-tank light with timer modes

hygger Mini Pro planted-aquarium light, 30 W

A compact planted-tank light with an adjustable arm, brightness settings and 6/8/10-hour timer choices. The 30 W maximum is not a required operating level for a low-tech nano aquarium.

  • 30 W model family HG325
  • Adjustable arm and brightness
  • 6 / 8 / 10-hour timer settings
Suits

A small planted setup with a confirmed compatible clamp and a lighting plan that uses appropriate output and a dark period.

Keep in mind
  • The maker’s clamp wording is inconsistent; confirm exact rim compatibility and the supplied drawing before ordering.
  • Do not assume the maximum output suits a shallow low-tech tank or that a night mode should run all night.

When a clip-on light makes sense

A clip-on aquarium light can provide a useful mounting arrangement where a full bar would not fit a small aquarium. An adjustable arm may let you position the light over a central planting area while keeping part of the rim accessible. Those benefits depend on a secure supported clamp, appropriate coverage and a safe cable route.

Our shortlist compares two different approaches: the Aquael Leddy Smart 2 Plant 6 W and hygger Mini Pro 30 W. They are not equivalent output options, and maximum wattage is not a ranking of suitability. The Aquael is a compact slide-on format; the hygger offers a repositionable arm, dimming and timer modes. These are specification-led comparisons, with model-specific limitations made explicit.

A small footprint does not establish that a tank suits every small fish or that a high-output lamp is needed. Choose livestock and planting for the actual aquarium, then assess the lighting. For tanks better served by an adjustable bar, compare low-tech planted lights instead.

Measure the rim profile and mounting space

Measure the bare glass thickness and any frame, lip or lid that occupies the clamping area. A clamp opening larger than the glass thickness does not prove it can sit securely around a shaped rim. Check the available flat contact area, cable route and clearance to open the lid or service the filter.

For Leddy Smart 2, the manufacturer’s model material describes glass up to 6 mm thick, tanks 10–50 L and height up to 35 cm. The mounting slides onto the edge, so a frame or cover can still obstruct it. Confirm the exact 6 W Plant model: later 4.8 W Day & Night products have different specifications and controls, even though the family name looks familiar.

The hygger HG325 Mini Pro has a different adjustable clamp and arm. The manufacturer’s current page gives inconsistent thickness wording alongside its maximum-opening description. We therefore do not publish a guaranteed glass-thickness range for this selection. Obtain the exact supplied clamp drawing or manufacturer confirmation for your rim before ordering, particularly for a framed tank.

Never force a clamp onto aquarium glass or tighten it until a poor fit seems secure. Follow the prescribed pads, screws and contact method. If compatibility cannot be established, choose another supported mounting arrangement rather than relying on the light’s aquarium-litre label.

Aquael Leddy Smart 2 Plant: a compact straightforward option

The selected white Leddy Smart 2 Plant is the 6 W version, distinct from Sunny-spectrum and later Day & Night variants. It is worth comparing where its slide-on mount and small-tank application suit the layout. Confirm the supplied UK electrical version and the complete light assembly rather than a replacement part with a similar title.

Its compact shape does not guarantee equal light at every plant. Check where the fixture projects over the aquarium, whether wood or leaves create a dark foreground and whether a cover blocks the mount. A deeper aquarium at the edge of the maker’s application description still needs plants suited to the light actually reaching them.

Do not copy Day & Night switching sequences to this older 6 W model or assume it includes a timer because a related product does. Use the exact supplied instructions for on/off operation and any external switching arrangement. A clear dark period remains part of the lighting plan.

hygger Mini Pro: adjustability with output to manage

The HG325 Mini Pro family provides an adjustable arm, brightness settings and 6/8/10-hour timer choices. Its three lighting modes and 24/7 arrangement offer more control, but the 30 W maximum should not be treated as the desired level for a shallow low-tech aquarium. Start with an appropriate supported setting and observe the actual plants.

Arm adjustment changes height and where the beam falls. Higher placement can spread light differently, but does not create a universal coverage guarantee. Keep the mounting stable and follow the instructions when adjusting it, avoiding force transmitted through the clamp to the glass. Keep dry components and connections in the required position.

Confirm the exact model and selected Amazon variant. A similarly branded marine clip-on, a longer multi-head fixture and a small planted-tank light are different purchases. Use the controller instructions for this product rather than borrowing a timer sequence from another hygger lamp.

Judge the light at the leaves, including the edges

A central clip-on can leave the back corners or foreground less illuminated than the area directly underneath. Measure the plant depth and consider the aquarium’s front-to-back width, not only its litres. Shade-tolerant plants in appropriate positions may suit the arrangement better than a demanding carpet across the entire base.

Watts, lumens and Kelvin describe different properties. None alone tells you whether every leaf receives suitable light. Where a manufacturer provides PAR data, keep the stated distance and test conditions attached to it. Do not transfer a close-range reading to a shaded substrate through a lid.

Supported dimming can be useful for a low-tech tank because available carbon and nutrients may not support maximum output. Our length-and-depth guide explains the measurement plan, while light schedules and timers covers repeatable operation. Longer duration is not a reliable cure for poor coverage.

Check the cover arrangement and daily operation

Follow the exact fixture’s instructions about covers, splash protection and distance from water. A rating for the light body does not make its power supply or controller submersible. Do not assume all clip-on fixtures are suitable for an uncovered aquarium simply because photographs show one.

Keep cables free of lid pinch points and make the fixture easy to remove or reposition as instructed for maintenance. Inspect the clamp and mounting surface during normal care. Salt or mineral deposits, algae and plant growth can change the practical installation and light path over time.

Use an appropriate consistent programme with darkness at night. Blue viewing modes are still light; a 24/7 feature should be configured around the aquarium’s needs, not treated as an instruction to illuminate it continuously. Check restart behaviour after a power cut rather than assuming the programme and clock recover identically.

Before checkout, confirm the exact fixture, UK power arrangement, mounting compatibility and supported controller. A clip-on is a useful solution when its fit is established and its light serves the actual layout. If one of those points remains uncertain, resolve it before allowing the power rating or a small-tank label to make the decision.

For the planted layout, use lighting with floating plants and checks after changing a light. A compact fixture still needs a supported mount and a programme suited to the actual planting.

Common questions

Will any clip-on aquarium light fit a small tank?

No. Measure the glass, frame, lid and available clamping surface, then compare the exact mounting diagram. A small aquarium volume or a clamp’s maximum opening cannot prove secure compatibility with every rim profile.

Is the Leddy Smart 2 Plant 6 W the same as Day & Night?

They are different variants. The selected white 6 W Plant model should use its own specifications and controls. Do not assume a later 4.8 W Day & Night product has the same power, switching sequence or supplied accessories.

Why is there no guaranteed clamp range for the hygger selection?

The manufacturer’s current HG325 page uses inconsistent thickness wording. We avoid turning that into a guessed fit guarantee. Check the exact supplied clamp drawing or obtain manufacturer confirmation for the aquarium’s actual rim before ordering.

Does a 30 W clip-on need to run at full brightness?

No. Maximum power is not a target setting for every low-tech nano aquarium. Use the supported dimming and programme appropriately, considering plant demands, depth and available carbon and nutrients rather than assuming more output is always beneficial.

Can a clip-on light illuminate the whole substrate evenly?

Coverage depends on the beam, mounting height, tank width, depth and shading. Inspect the edges and foreground as well as the centre. A compact fixture above one point does not guarantee uniform light across every planting position.

Can I leave the blue mode on all night?

Blue output is still illumination. Provide an appropriate dark period and use any viewing mode deliberately, following the controller instructions. A night label or 24/7 feature does not establish that continuous visible lighting suits the fish or plants.
