Best Hang-On-Back Aquarium Filters for UK Tanks
Compare three hang-on-back filters by UK electrical suitability, lid and rim fit, intake protection, media access and practical maintenance.

The quick choice
Choose for your mounting space and maintenance
Check the exact UK electrical version and plug before buying. Then compare actual water volume, every intake, lid/rim fit and basket-removal space; the maker’s upper tank rating is only a starting screen.
Compare the supported installation
| Model | Maker’s upper tank rating | Published flow | Installation and service focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seachem Tidal 35 | 130 L | 500 L/h | Smaller removable basket; resolve exact rim/lid fit before a tight installation |
| Seachem Tidal 55 | 200 L | 1000 L/h | 7.5 cm stated wall clearance; assess surface and deeper intakes |
| EHEIM LiBERTY 130 / 2041 | 130 L | 220–570 L/h pump range | 145 × 180 × 135 mm body W × H × D; removable cartridges |
Published figures are manufacturer specifications, not common-condition performance tests. Confirm the selected UK electrical version. Body dimensions do not establish the complete service or lid-opening envelope.
The shortlist
Three hang-on-back filters to consider
A smaller removable-basket option
Seachem Tidal 35 hang-on-back filter
A hang-on-back filter with adjustable output, a removable media basket and a submerged self-priming pump. Choose it around the actual rim and water depth.
- Up to 130 L maker rating
- 500 L/h published flow
- 5 W for 230 V / 50 Hz
A freshwater installation suited to the published up-to-130 L maker rating and 500 L/h flow, with room for the complete filter.
- Confirm the selected UK electrical version and plug.
- Support drawings and summary dimensions differ; obtain the exact fit drawing before a tight lid or rim installation.
- Do not infer larger Tidal intake or skimmer arrangements from the shared name.
More intake and media flexibility
Seachem Tidal 55 hang-on-back filter
An adjustable hang-on-back with a removable basket, surface intake and telescoping submerged intake. Its larger return needs to suit the fish and tank layout.
- Up to 200 L maker rating
- 1000 L/h published flow
- 7.5 cm stated wall clearance
A suitable aquarium with room for the body, lid access and the maker’s stated rear and rim clearances.
- Confirm 230 V / 50 Hz and a suitable UK plug on the selected offer.
- The extra surface intake needs separate consideration for small livestock.
- Maximum output and the upper litre label are not stocking guarantees.
A cartridge-based alternative
EHEIM LiBERTY 130 hang-on filter
The LiBERTY 130 / type 2041 uses removable media cartridges, an adjustable intake pipe and a red pump-control knob. It offers a different maintenance format from a loose-media basket.
- Type 2041 / LiBERTY 130
- 220–570 L/h stated pump range
- 145 × 180 × 135 mm body W × H × D
An aquarium whose rim, hood opening and rear clearance accommodate the complete type 2041 installation.
- Confirm the UK electrical version, plug and exact model.
- Published body dimensions exclude your lid, service access and hose or cable route.
- Cartridges and intake protection require exact part matching; do not discard established media together.
When a hang-on-back filter makes sense
A hang-on-back aquarium filter places its main media chamber outside the glass and returns water over a short spillway. It can free swimming space without the separate cabinet and long hose runs of a canister. The trade-off is a very specific mounting position: the filter needs a compatible rim, a clear route through or around the lid, space behind the aquarium and access from above. Check those points before comparing flow figures.
Our shortlist contains the Seachem Tidal 35, larger Tidal 55 and EHEIM LiBERTY 130. These are useful alternatives for different installation and maintenance preferences. The Tidal models use removable baskets; the LiBERTY uses a cartridge arrangement. A basket is convenient for flexible media choices, while a fitted cartridge can simplify handling if the correct replacements remain available.
Start with actual water volume and fish requirements. A maker's maximum aquarium capacity does not describe the feeding load, adult livestock or return current in your tank. A filter suitable for one moderately stocked aquarium can be unsuitable for another with the same dimensions. For a closed hood with little rear clearance, compare internal filters before committing to a format that cannot mount securely.
Check the electrical version before the physical fit
An Amazon UK listing is not proof that every selectable offer has a UK plug and the correct electrical rating. Check the exact model, seller description and product label for a suitable UK supply and plug. Do not treat a travel adaptor as a way to correct an incompatible voltage or frequency. Ask the supplier to resolve an unclear offer before purchasing it.
Seachem publishes different electrical versions of the Tidal filters. The 230 V / 50 Hz specification is the relevant reference for a corresponding UK installation; its 120 V figures should not be substituted because the housing looks the same. The EHEIM listing identifies LiBERTY type 2041, which corresponds to the 130 model, but the selected electrical version still needs checking.
Keep the manual for the version supplied. Electrical isolation, minimum operating water level, priming and servicing instructions belong to that exact unit. A filter that is easy to lift out still needs dry electrical connections and a safe cable route. If a listing mixes several model names, do not use its largest capacity or another variant's photograph as proof of what will arrive.
Measure the rim, lid and maintenance space
Measure the complete rim profile, including trim or bracing, rather than the bare glass thickness alone. Check where the filter's hook, internal pump or intake and levelling device will sit. The lid must close in its intended position without pressing against the filter, pinching a cable or leaving an unsuitable escape gap for the livestock. Avoid cutting structural bracing or glass to make equipment fit.
For the Tidal 55, Seachem lists a unit envelope of approximately 20.5 × 15.5 × 21.4 cm, with 7.5 cm wall clearance and 2.6 cm trim clearance. Those are useful screening figures, not a complete hood-opening template. Allow space to lift the lid and remove the media basket without moving the filled aquarium. A shelf directly above the rim can make an otherwise workable filter difficult to service.
The Tidal 35 is the smaller body, with a published unit size of approximately 15.5 × 13 × 18 cm and 7 cm wall clearance. Its summary dimensions and detailed support drawing are not fully consistent. For a tight rim or hood installation, obtain the exact supplied model's fit drawing or measure the unit before relying on a marginal clearance. We do not turn that uncertainty into a guaranteed maximum rim size.
EHEIM lists the LiBERTY 130 body at 145 mm wide, 180 mm high and 135 mm deep. The overall front-to-back dimension does not say how much sits behind your particular rim. Compare the actual mounting shape and the space for cartridge removal. Photographing the rim with a ruler can help a supplier answer a fit question accurately.
Choose a model for the job it will do
Tidal 35: consider it where the smaller basket format and published 500 L/h output suit the tank. Its up-to-130 L maker rating is an initial screen, not a reason to put it on every tank below that volume. The pump is designed to start while correctly submerged, but self-priming does not mean dry-running is acceptable. Do not transfer the Tidal 55's telescoping-intake and separate intake-control description to the 35 simply because they share a family name.
Tidal 55: consider it where the aquarium justifies the larger basket and return. Seachem publishes 1000 L/h and an up-to-200 L rating. Its surface intake and deeper intake offer additional collection paths, but both matter when assessing small-livestock protection. A sponge over one lower opening does not necessarily protect the complete system. Extra flow is useful only when it can be distributed appropriately for the fish.
LiBERTY 130: consider the type 2041 if a cartridge format and adjustable intake are preferable. EHEIM publishes a 220–570 L/h pump range and an up-to-130 L application. Keep the distinction between pump output and the water actually returning through loaded media. Check the exact cartridge and intake-protection references before assuming a generic pad or sponge will fit.
None of these specifications proves which filter is quietest in your room. Waterfall noise depends on operating water level, installation, deposits and room acoustics. The sensible comparison is the complete installation you can maintain, rather than an unsupported noise score or an upper litre label.
Plan intake protection and the waterfall together
Look at every route by which water enters the unit. The opening size, intake area and strength of local suction all matter for fry, shrimp and small fish. A guard that prevents a larger animal entering can still have gaps unsuitable for smaller juveniles. Follow the intake-guard guide to assess sleeves, coarse prefilters and additional surface openings.
Keep the return within the aquarium and preserve appropriate surface movement. A low water level can turn a short return into a noisier drop; the solution must remain within the filter's operating limits and the tank's safe fill level. Do not obstruct the spillway with improvised packing or allow plants to redirect water outside the tank. Observe the fish's resting areas as well as the movement immediately under the outlet.
A hang-on filter's waterfall differs from a canister spray bar. Do not attach an unrelated outlet accessory to the spillway or force a hose onto a housing that was not designed for it. If the required return pattern needs more flexibility, compare spray bars and directional outlets alongside the filter formats that support them.
Compare the maintenance you will repeat
Check how you will remove the basket or cartridges without spilling dirty water into electrical equipment. Prepare a container of removed aquarium water for established media, and preserve useful biological surfaces when servicing. Rinsing brand-new media before installation and maintaining mature media are different jobs; follow media cleaning guidance for an occupied tank.
A removable cartridge is a shape, not a universal instruction to discard all filtration together. Identify which component provides established biological filtration and which is a replaceable chemical or polishing stage. Replacing carbon does not require replacing sound mature foam. Likewise, the supplied fresh media is not evidence that a new filter is already cycled: use the fishless-cycling guide or plan a safe transition from existing filtration.
Include replacement media, model-specific rotor parts and your electricity tariff in the budget. Use the running-cost calculator with the actual unit's wattage. A lower power figure alone cannot show whether a filter fits the tank, restarts correctly or provides the circulation its inhabitants need.
Common questions
Can a hang-on-back filter fit an aquarium with a lid?
Sometimes, if the lid and rim provide the correct opening without pressure on the filter or cables. Measure the mounting profile and basket-removal space. Do not cut structural bracing to force a fit.
Does an Amazon UK listing guarantee a UK electrical version?
No. Check the selected offer, electrical label and plug. A marketplace address does not establish voltage or frequency compatibility, particularly where imported versions or several variants share a listing.
Is the Tidal 55 automatically better than the Tidal 35?
No. It is larger and has a higher published output, but those features must suit the aquarium and its livestock. Check installation space, intake arrangements and the return current rather than choosing the larger number automatically.
Are hang-on-back filters safe for shrimp and fry?
Assess every intake and the smallest livestock involved. An appropriate fitted guard can help, but a lower intake sponge may leave another opening exposed. No filter format alone is a universal safety guarantee.
Why does my hang-on filter make waterfall noise?
Check water level, mounting and the return path within the manual's limits. A longer fall, debris or vibration can change the sound. Do not solve noise by routinely switching biological filtration off overnight.
Must I replace every cartridge during maintenance?
No. Identify the mechanical, biological and chemical stages and follow the exact servicing instructions. Preserve established biological filtration rather than treating a complete replacement pack as an instruction to discard everything together.
