How to Arrange Filter Media in a Canister Filter
Arrange aquarium canister media around its actual water path, preserving mature material, keeping baskets seated and avoiding packed pads or bypass routes.

Find the actual water path before moving media
Canister media should be arranged around the route water follows through the exact filter. The first stage encountered by water is not always the highest basket you can see when the lid comes off. Some filters use a separate vertical prefilter before water passes through the main basket stack; other designs route water differently. A universal top-to-bottom diagram can therefore be wrong for the filter on your table.
Find the manual and identify the inlet, prefilter, basket connections, central passages and return to the pump. Note the orientation of trays, covers and handles as well as the media labels. Photograph the existing arrangement before removing anything, particularly if the filter is already established or was supplied with media in a deliberate sequence.
This guide covers layout and reassembly. For the role of each material, use filter media explained; for washing established material, use cleaning filter media. Changing a basket arrangement is not a reason to clean or replace every surface at the same time.
Separate the jobs without assuming each material does only one
Mechanical stages catch particles. Coarser material can protect finer stages from loading rapidly, where that sequence matches the filter design. A fine polishing pad can improve suspended-particle capture but may restrict flow sooner than a coarser sponge. Adding more polishing material does not automatically improve the filtration system as a whole.
Biological media provide surfaces for the microorganisms that process waste. Established sponges can contribute to this too, so a foam stage should not be treated as biologically disposable merely because it also catches debris. Fresh rings and mature rings may look similar while having very different biological roles in the aquarium.
Chemical media have a defined purpose, such as adsorption by activated carbon. They are not compulsory filler for every empty space. Select them for an identified need and use the placement and replacement instructions for the product. Activated carbon has different limits and replacement rules from a reusable sponge or mature biological stage.
Use the supplied model arrangement as the starting point
The Fluval 07 manual explains that supplied media are deliberately placed at particular basket levels. Record those levels when unpacking, remove protective packaging as directed and restore the intended arrangement. Its separate foam screen and basket stack must also seat correctly. The media cover is part of the water path, rather than an optional packing piece.
That is a model example, not a claim that every canister must contain the same materials in the same order. If changing the supplied plan, establish how the alternative will preserve flow, biological capacity and the operation of the basket passages. Do not move fine pads into an unapproved position simply because a generic diagram calls that the final stage.
Use the correct shaped replacement foam. The Fluval 206/207 pack below is distinct from the 306/307 version. A pad pushed into a basket where it does not belong can create a restriction, prevent proper closure or allow water around its edge.
A matching 206/207 foam set
Fluval 206/207 Bio-Foam value pack
A genuine model-specific pack combining Bio-Foam, Bio-Foam+ and Bio-Foam Max for the 206/207 media arrangement.
- 206 / 207 compatibility
- Bio-Foam, Bio-Foam+ and Bio-Foam Max
- Fluval item A335
A 206 or 207 owner replacing the required foam stages according to the exact maintenance instructions.
- The 306/307 and 406/407 packs are different variants.
- A pack of several stages does not mean every stage should be changed at the same time.
For a filter bought used, confirm that the visible arrangement is complete and correct before copying it. A previous owner may have removed a tray or mixed parts from another model. Compare the actual assembly with the parts diagram rather than assuming that a lid which can be clipped down proves the inside is right.
Preserve established media while changing the arrangement
Prepare a dedicated container of removed aquarium water for mature media and keep the work organised so it can return promptly to suitable conditions. Avoid drying established material while trying different basket layouts. If the interruption will be prolonged, maintain suitable oxygenation and a practical filtration plan for any fish present, rather than leaving the media sealed and assuming it remains functional indefinitely.
Where a layout change needs more biological material, fresh media offers additional surface for future colonisation. It does not instantly replace the processing capacity of removed mature media. Keep established material where appropriate and verify ammonia and nitrite after a substantial change. The mature-media seeding guide covers that distinction in more detail.
Fluval BIOMAX below is one option for a compatible basket. It is relevant when a filter genuinely needs suitable additional media, rather than an instruction to discard a sound existing biological stage. Check the space and product directions before adding a full pack.
Biological surface in a compatible basket
Fluval BIOMAX biological media, 500 g
Porous ceramic rings intended as biological filter media. Use the quantity and placement appropriate to a compatible filter basket rather than packing every available space.
- 500 g pack
- Porous biological media
- Fluval item A1456
A filter with a suitable media compartment and a clear plan to retain established biological material during changes.
- New dry media is not a mature biological filter.
- Check basket space and water path; this pack is not a promise to remove aquarium nitrate.
Do not use the bag's weight as the filter's required quantity. Basket shape, the rest of the media and the manufacturer's supported arrangement determine what fits. Keep any mesh bag clear of passages and ensure its closure cannot lift a tray or obstruct the media cover.
Leave the designed flow routes and seating surfaces clear
Put baskets back in the correct orientation and check that each sits fully on the one below. A ring trapped under a tray, a folded bag edge or foam projecting into a joint can stop the stack seating. Do not use the lid clamps to compress an overfilled arrangement into place. Remove the obstruction and identify why the assembly does not close normally.
Overpacking fine material can increase resistance. Leaving an unintended gap may allow water to bypass part of the media. Both problems can occur in a filter that looks full and tidy. Preserve the seals and covers specified in the design rather than filling every visible void with loose wool.
EHEIM SUBSTRATpro illustrates another biological material that belongs only in a suitable media location. Its sintered-glass surface does not establish universal suitability for every tray or a need to mix several brands together. A simple supported layout is easier to maintain than an unnecessarily complicated collection of small bags.
Additional biological surface
EHEIM SUBSTRATpro biological media, 1 litre
Pearl-shaped sintered-glass biological media for compatible filters. New material provides a colonisation surface; it is not a substitute for mature donor media.
- 1-litre pack listing
- Sintered-glass biological surface
- Fresh material requires establishment
A filter whose basket, media sequence and water flow suit this material.
- Do not force media into an unsuitable filter or block flow.
- Established media can carry pathogens as well as useful organisms.
- Fresh media does not instantly solve a stalled cycle.
Keep a record of what each stage is and why it is present. That makes the next replacement decision more useful: an exhausted adsorption bag, a clogged polishing pad and a torn sponge require different responses. Use when to replace media rather than replacing the complete contents because one stage needs attention.
Reassemble, prime and verify the result
Inspect the lid seal and its channel before closing. A media-layout problem can distort the lid's seating without being a defective gasket. Do not add extra clamps or tighten a component beyond the manual's method to overcome a tray that is sitting too high. For a genuine seal problem, use the leak-check guide.
Follow the exact filling and priming procedure. The Fluval 07 manual specifically says not to prefill the canister when reassembling; it is allowed to fill through the intended priming process before power is connected. Other filters can have a different sequence, so do not transfer that instruction blindly.
Confirm continuous return, normal operating sound and dry joints. If output is unexpectedly poor after rearrangement, stop and check the basket orientation, covers, packing and hose route. Do not assume the media needs to settle for days while a major restriction remains. Monitor water quality where the established system has been disturbed, and keep the existing livestock's needs central to the next decision.
Common questions
Does water pass through every canister from top to bottom?
No. Filters can have separate prefilters and different internal routes. Follow the exact model's diagram and identify the first stage water reaches rather than copying a universal basket order.
Should I put fine filter wool in every empty space?
No. Extra fine material can restrict flow or interfere with basket seating. Use the supported media locations and leave the designed passages, seals and covers clear.
Can I replace mature rings with a larger bag of new media?
New media provides surface for colonisation but does not instantly carry the biological capacity of the mature material removed. Plan the transition and verify water results rather than equating weight with established filtration.
Must carbon always be included in a canister?
Use it for a defined purpose and follow the filter and media directions. It is not compulsory filler for every arrangement and should not displace necessary established biological filtration.
Why will the canister lid not close after repacking?
Check for overfilled baskets, trapped rings or bag edges, misplaced covers and incorrect tray orientation. Do not use the clamps to force the stack down or assume a new gasket will correct it.
What should I check after changing the media layout?
Confirm continuous flow, normal sound and dry connections, then monitor appropriate water parameters after disturbance. Unexpectedly low output calls for a check of packing and assembly rather than an assumption that restriction is normal.
